mother was singing to me naked in bed
clapping happily
cause I was no Jew

as if to be a Jew
is harder survive
is to be always pointed out
in an enfilade of a street

to be yourself both in fear
and in language
to desire children
and be afraid of children

to lay out bread
and candles on a table
and light them on Saturday
with the new dead

to know well
with your shadow on your back
how it shrinks
and cannot shrink

well, rather in fairy tales
where the seven-league shoes
stride faster
but there are no such shoes
